An NFC read is what turns a document check from looking at a piece of paper into querying a chip the issuing state signed.

Why it is stronger evidence than a photograph

The chip carries the same identity data as the printed page, plus a signature from the issuing authority. A forger can reproduce printing; reproducing a valid signature from a country's certificate authority is a different order of problem. That is why chip-verified reads sit above optical reads on every assurance scale.

The dependency people skip

A chip read is worthless without validating the signature on its contents against the issuing country's certificate. Reading the data and trusting the data are separate steps, and only the second one requires a trust store you keep current.

Where it is unavailable

Documents without a chip, phones without a reader, and users who decline. A flow that depends on NFC needs an answer for all three, and that answer is usually a human-reviewed fallback.

Near-field communication is the short-range radio standard by which a phone reads the contactless chip embedded in a modern passport or identity card. The chip contents and the protocol for reading them are specified by ICAO Doc 9303 for travel documents. Solidus reads them; none of the standard is ours.

The chip columns are in verify's migration 024_nfc_chip.sql and the read path in the backend's nfc step. A reader can confirm the standard independently: any conforming NFC reader application reads the same data groups from the same chip.
