EUDI Wallet

The EUDI Wallet (European Digital Identity Wallet) is the actual piece of software eIDAS 2.0 requires every EU Member State to make available: an app, on the citizen's own device, that holds their PID (their baseline government-issued identity attributes) and any other (Q)EAA, (Qualified) Electronic Attestations of Attributes, third-party credentials like a diploma or a professional license, and lets them present those selectively to whoever's asking, without that issuer being contacted again.

What it does, mechanically

1. Instantiation, a citizen downloads a wallet (from their Member State or an approved provider) and gets it bound to a real identity, once.
2. Holds credentials, the PID plus any (Q)EAAs the holder collects, each cryptographically tied to a key the wallet controls.
3. Presents selectively, when a bank, a landlord, an age-gated website, or a government portal asks for proof of something ("are you over 18," "what's your legal name"), the wallet discloses only what was asked, not the whole credential.
4. Is attested (the wallet software itself has to prove it meets security requirements ("wallet attestation"), and credentials are meant to be bound to a hardware-backed key) a secure element or TEE, on the holder's device, not just stored in software.

This is the same conceptual shape as any self-sovereign-identity wallet. The difference is that the EUDI Wallet's technical requirements are written into EU law, and its trust model runs through Member-State-authorized issuers, not an open network.

Why the deadline matters

By roughly the end of 2026, every one of the EU's 27 Member States is expected to have at least one working, interoperable EUDI Wallet available: a single digital-identity rollout across roughly 450 million people, which is a genuinely unprecedented scale for a mandated technical rollout of this kind. That is the reason so much of the identity industry, Solidus included, tracks this regulation closely even outside the EU: whatever architecture wins here becomes the reference other jurisdictions borrow from.

Solidus's actual relationship to it

Solidus does not build, does not certify, and does not claim conformance with the EUDI Wallet spec. Solidus Identity, the product at identity.solidus.network, is a different thing: a wallet for did:solidus-anchored credentials, with no legal recognition under eIDAS and no relationship to any Member State's rollout. A Solidus-issued credential could theoretically be re-packaged for an EUDIW-conformant verifier, but only through a partner organization that already holds QTSP status (see that entry): a partnership that does not exist today. Building a native, hardware-key-bound holder wallet of Solidus's own is still a roadmap item, not a shipped one.

Check it yourself

The reference implementation the EU actually publishes is real, open, and runnable: github.com/eu-digital-identity-wallet. Go look at what a Member-State-grade wallet actually has to do: there is nothing equivalent from Solidus to compare it against, and that gap is worth seeing plainly rather than papered over.
