eSIM Activation

eSIM activation is the process of enabling mobile service on an embedded SIM, a chip soldered into the device rather than a removable card, by remotely downloading a carrier's operator profile onto it. For the buyer this usually looks like scanning a QR code or tapping a link inside a carrier or travel-eSIM app; underneath, the device and the carrier's provisioning server run a standardized handshake that authenticates the device, downloads an encrypted profile, and installs it.
This entry is about the activation mechanism specifically, the technical act of turning on connectivity. It's worth distinguishing from SIM Registration, the separate, regulator-driven requirement in many countries to tie a subscriber's verified identity to that connection before or at activation. The two are often bundled in a single signup flow, but one is a telecom engineering standard and the other is a compliance obligation with its own legal basis.
Who actually built this
GSMA, the trade body representing mobile network operators worldwide, wrote the Remote SIM Provisioning specifications that make eSIM activation work: SGP.21 defines the overall architecture (the roles of the device, the SM-DP+ profile-download server, and the SM-DS discovery server), SGP.22 specifies the consumer-device flow in detail, and SGP.32 extends the model to IoT devices that can't scan a QR code themselves. Every carrier, eSIM reseller, and travel-eSIM app (Airalo, Holafly, and the carriers' own apps among them) implements these specs or licenses a provisioning platform that does. None of this is Solidus's design, and Solidus is not a telecom operator.
Where identity fits in
Buying a travel eSIM commonly still means a from-scratch identity capture, uploading a passport photo, filling in a registration form, often at the worst possible moment for friction: on arrival, on unreliable airport wifi, for a traveler who may have had the same passport verified an hour earlier at hotel check-in or airline check-in. There is, today, no standard way for that earlier verification to travel forward into the eSIM signup. This is the gap Solidus's vertical strategy is aimed at, not the eSIM technology itself.
Solidus today
Nothing here is built. Solidus does not provision eSIMs, does not integrate with any SM-DP+ provisioning platform, and has no eSIM-provider customer. The underlying identity-verification pipeline (document capture, liveness, face match) that would supply a traveler's proof is live on Solidus's public testnet, but it has never been wired into an eSIM activation flow for a real provider. Whether SIM-registration-style identity rules apply to short-stay travel eSIMs the same way they apply to a domestic postpaid SIM is also unconfirmed and varies by country, treat any specific claim as unverified until checked market-by-market.

SIM Registration is the regulatory requirement often paired with activation but conceptually distinct from it. KYC and IDV are the identity-verification techniques a compliant activation flow would draw on. Credential Portability is the reuse idea, a traveler's already-proved identity, carried forward, behind Solidus's interest in this vertical at all.
Nereden geliyor
Bunu başkası belirtti. Solidus bir araya getiriyor.
The technical mechanism, downloading and enabling a carrier profile onto an embedded SIM chip without inserting a physical card, is defined by GSMA's Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP) specifications: SGP.21 (the architecture) and SGP.22 (the technical specification for consumer devices), with SGP.32 extending the model to IoT devices. GSMA is the mobile-operator industry body that wrote and maintains these specs; every phone, eSIM app, and MVNO that activates an eSIM implements them, or licenses software that does. Solidus is not a mobile network operator, does not implement RSP, and has no role in the eSIM technology itself. The identity-registration requirement some markets layer on top of activation is a separate, regulator-defined matter, see SIM Registration.

None. No eSIM activation has ever been fed by a Solidus-issued credential, live or in test.
